Colorado Winter Fishing
Winter fly fishing in Colorado is unlike any other time of the year. The cool weather discourages many fishermen making the rivers and streams calm and quiet. This unique time of the year gives anglers the ability to practice their skills and to fall in love with a different type of fishing.
#How to Survive the Cold
The Colorado weather can seem brutal, but that is probably because you did not wear the appropriate clothing. Layers are your friend when it comes to fishing in the cold, so wear as many layers as you can. Headwear and gloves are going to be a necessity. Warm hands are important when fishing. A dry towel will help keep your hands warm even after you get them wet. Put hand warmers in your gloves to stay warm during the harsh winds.
Snacks are a great way to warm up your insides, as well as a warm drink! Pack plenty of snacks and liquids, if you are unsure of how much to bring, bring it all!
You do not want to find yourself in the cold trying to bait a hook. If you can do it before you leave, do. This will save you important time and will help keep your hands out of the cold.
##When to Fish
In freezing temperatures, fish tend to save energy. When fishing for trout look for areas that have more sun exposure than others. Fish tend to migrate to these areas for warmth. The morning is the best time to fish. You may be lucky enough to find a day in December with 50-degree weather if so, take advantage of it!
Try to keep your guides from icing up, because this can be difficult in the freezing temperatures. Avoid striping your line and cast short, as this will help your lines not to freeze. Fish will use as little energy as possible going after your bate, make sure you are ready.
###Where to Fish
River areas that are located downstream are a great place to fish! A few examples of this in Colorado include the South Platte River, the Williams Fork River, and Dream Stream.
