Get Wild(flowers) in Colorado
Colorado’s magnificent wilderness is a sight to behold year-round, but one of our favorite seasons is spring when the wildflowers take over the mountain slopes and plains. This spring, take advantage of the beautiful weather and head to some of the best areas to experience Colorado’s wildflowers.
####Head up the Butte
Crested Butte is known as the wildflower capital of Colorado for a reason. Filled to the brim with incredible views, wildlife, and plant life, the Lupine Trail, a moderately difficult hike is one that you will not want to miss. It’s fairly accessible, with a shuttle that can easily connect you to either end of the trail, which is a popular trail used by both hikers and mountain bikers. It’s approximately seven miles long, so plan on making a morning or afternoon of it.
If you’re looking for something a bit more intensive (with an even better wildflower payoff), check out the trail from Aspen to Crested Butte. This 11-mile trail will take the better part of a day, so make sure you bring plenty of water and plan to have a picnic in the most incredible field of wildflowers that you’ve ever seen.
####Tips and Tricks
As tempting as it might be, don’t pick any wildflowers to take home with you. If you’re from out of state, you might be bringing non-indigenous species of bugs and flowers home with you, which is never good for your local environment. Even if you call Colorado home, avoid disrupting nature as much as possible to protect and support the beautiful Colorado wilderness.
Along those terms, you also want to avoid disrupting or destroying the natural blooms. Stick to the established trails. If you’re on public lands, this will make sure you’re respecting the shared land of all Coloradoans. If you’re on your private land, this will help you continue to conserve the rural land you’ve chosen to care for.
Following these standard hiking rules, like “Only leave footprints behind” and “Leave no trace” will allow us to continue enjoying Colorado’s wildflowers for years to come.
