Getting the Kids Outdoors in Colorado

For many families, getting outdoors is a great chance to reconnect with each other and with nature. If your kids aren’t used to it, however, it can be tough to get them to make the leap from the couch to nature. Try these tips to make the transition easier and to help your kids love the Colorado wilderness as much as you do:

Take it easy. While Colorado may have plenty of 14er’s available to hike, your kids may not be ready for it (yet). Instead, try something a bit easier, like the Trading Post Trail at Red Rocks Park. This easy hike is close to town and mostly flat, yet isn’t lacking in incredible views of the red rocks Colorado is known for.

Spice it up. If your kids aren’t used to spending time outdoors, you want to make sure they have a great time as they get used to it. Instead of your standard nature walk, why not try an overnight camping trip near town, like at Guanella Pass, only one hour outside of Denver? This will give you and the kids the chance to explore the great outdoors, see the stars, and snack on some tasty camp treats.

Try something new. Never hiked a particular trail or fished a certain stream? No problem! Exploring something new together is a great chance to bond with the kids and show that it’s fun to learn about and do something new or different outdoors.

Keep it regular. The best way to help your kids love the great Colorado wilderness as much as you do? Get outside together, and get outside often. Once you get them outdoors, show them all of the things you love, like hunting, fishing, and more.
