Skiing Smart: How to Get the Kids on the Slopes and Keep Them Safe
Now that winter is fully upon us, many a Coloradan, as well as visitors, are considering hitting the slopes. Colorado is known for it’s excellent skiing, so you and the family are sure to enjoy it. If you’re having trouble getting the kids in the snow, or have first-time skiers in your group, keep these tips in mind:
###Stay warm A proper ski outfit is key for anyone hitting the slopes, and a cold kid won’t want to stay outside for very long. Make sure everyone has a heavy, waterproof jacket and pants, with plenty of layers underneath to maintain warmth.
###Gear Needs Don’t skimp on the necessary equipment for your family. Kids, especially young, fall-prone ones, need a well-fiiting helmet.
###Safety first Done right, skiing can be a safe and enjoyable sport for the whole family. That said, there is always the potential for injury, and you and your family should take the necessary precautions.
####Buddy up Make sure that each member of the family has a buddy to stick with on the slopes. This will make sure that, should someone have a bad fall or get nervous, they’ve got an adult or older family member to help them through it.
####Follow the rules This may seem obvious, but make sure you and your family follow the rules of your ski resort. If an area is off-limits, it’s for a reason–so pay attention!
####Stay smart Skier etiquette exists for a reason, so make sure your kids know it and use it. Never stop in the middle of a trail where they won’t be seen until it’s too late, pay attention to where other skiers are, and let other’s know where you are by calling out, “On your left” or “On your right” when passing others.
###Learn from the experts If you or the kids have never skied before, don’t hesitate to sign up for a lesson. This will make sure you know the basics, and might even give the kids a chance to make new friends.
###Focus on fun Even if you’re kids aren’t necessarily succeeding on the slopes, your family can still have a great time. Take advantage of the snow and have a snowball fight, drink hot cocoa, and spend your time on easier slopes where the kids feel more comfortable.
