Winter Activities in Colorado

Winter is coming… and Coloradans are gearing up for the many outdoor activities Colorado has to offer when the weather turns cold. For those with young children, or with children who are just starting to enjoy the outdoors, it might be tough to help them enjoy the cold weather as much as you’d like. If you’re not sure what to do with the kids this winter, take a look at some of the many outdoor activities perfect for you and the family:

Dog sledding: Your typical ski resorts have much more than the slopes to entertain the kids. If your kids love adventure, why not sign them up for a dog sled ride? They’ll get to see the incredible Colorado countryside, meet other adventurous kids, and spend some time with the animals.

Take a hike: If the weather is mild, try an easy hike with the kids, like the Trading Post Trail at Red Rocks Park. Close to Denver and Colorado Springs, this trail is easy to find and easy to follow, perfect for those looking for an mild hike or midday stroll.

Ice skating: With plenty of indoor and outdoor skating rinks, Colorado is perfect for ice skating, no matter the weather. Try Beaver Creek Village, or Keystone’s Lakeside Village, for a spin—you can enjoy skating with the kids, along with hot chocolate and other treats to help you stay warm.

Fly fishing: Colorado is known for its excellent fishing year-round. Don’t just limit you and the family to the slopes this winter—head out to the river or lake and experience the world-class fishing for yourself. Dressed in layers and with plenty of snacks and warm beverages to share, you’ll have no problem ignoring the cold and enjoying the great outdoors with the family.

Your best bet will be to arrive midmorning when the sun is shining—the warmer patches of water will be where fish are more likely to feed. If you’re worried that the water will be iced over, try heading slightly downstream from a dam, where the water will be warmer and more likely to be flowing freely.

No matter what winter activities you choose to do with the family, Colorado has plenty of options. If you’re ready to experience Colorado’s incredible outdoor activities year round, we can help.
