Winter Hiking

Winter is an excellent time to hike in Colorado. Now is your chance to experience incredible views, temperate weather, amazing wildlife, and pristine, uncrowded trails. If you’re going out for a hike next weekend, these tips will help you make the most of your time.

####Start small: Winter is not the time to take on a major hike if you’re not used to it. Instead, try a shorter, easier hike that only takes a couple of hours at most, and give yourself plenty of time for rest breaks.

####Layer up: To stay warm, make sure you wear plenty of layers. That way, as you build up a sweat, you can take layers off to cool down without exposing yourself to the elements unnecessarily.

####Stay hydrated: When you’re out in the cold, it can be easy to forget to drink water. Make sure you bring along the same amount that you would in warmer weather, and keep sipping throughout your hike.

####Snack as you walk: Bring snacks that you can eat easily as you keep moving. Not only will this help you stay warm, but you won’t have to worry about finding a dry place to sit. Try snack bars or nuts for an easy, tasty snack the whole family can enjoy.

####Stay safe: Make sure you’ve shared with a friend or family member where you’re headed, and when they can expect you back. That way, if something does go wrong, you’ll have someone looking out for you.

####Check the weather: This may seem obvious, but it’s one of the most important tips we have for you. While much of Colorado weather, especially off the mountains, is temperate during winter, inclement weather can occur. Even if it doesn’t, knowing what to expect, whether that’s sunshine, rain, or snow, can help make sure you have the appropriate gear.
